CoastView is a non-profit science education company. Our mission is to promote exploration of the Alaska, Pacific Northwest, and California coasts through pictures and stories. Most of the images are derived from a program called ShoreZone that mapped the intertidal shorelines of Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. The images were acquired using a low flying helicopter during the lowest tides of the year. The images are used to classify coastal features in a geographic information system. Read more about the ShoreZone program here and here. Images in Washington used for the blog posts are more recent than those from the ShoreZone program and were acquired by the Washington Department of Ecology. Read more about the shoreline imaging program in Washington here and here. The images for California are only used for the blog posts and were acquired by the California Coastal Records Project. The CoastView App
We discovered that for most people the images are the most compelling product. So in addition to this website, that only highlights the most striking pictures in order to tell a story about a place of interest, our challenge was to provide instant access to about a half-million images covering over 100,000 km of coastline on a mobile device. The result is the CoastView app that allows an interactive experience for viewing and exploring the coast, planning trips, and viewing images offline while traveling. Along with stunning pictures, the CoastView app features information about local ecology, history, and culture -- bringing to life the striking beauty of the coasts of Alaska, British Columbia, Washington and Oregon for visitors that fly over, cruise past, drive along, or explore from the comfort of home.
