The name for Hug Point dates to the early days of travel between the communities of Cannon Beach and Arch Cape when wagons were driven on the beach and had to hug this particular point to avoid being caught in the surf.
Nehalem Bay is an estuary at the mouth of the Nehalem River that drains a watershed of about 855 square miles (2,210 sq km) in the Northern Oregon Coast Range northwest of Portland.
