The Westridge Marine Terminal is located on the south shore of Burrard Inlet, about 1 mile east (1.6 km) of the Second Narrows Bridge, and 5.3 miles (8.5 km) east of Vancouver, in the City of Burnaby, British Columbia. The terminal is part of a refinery and storage facility currently owned by Parkland Fuel Corporation.
Burnaby is located at the geographical center of the Metro Vancouver area and occupies 24,320 acres (9,842 ha) between the city of Vancouver on the west and Port Moody, Coquitlam, and New Westminster on the east. Burnaby is further bounded by Burrard Inlet to the north and the Fraser River to the south. A refinery was established here in 1935 by Standard Oil of California (now Chevron) as one of the few heavy industries in the area. Major expansion took place in mid 1950's as part of the post war building boom in British Columbia. Chevron sold the facility to Parkland in 2017.
On February 14, 1947, large oil deposits were discovered in Alberta and in 1951 the Trans Mountain Pipeline Company was created to build a pipeline to transport the oil to the Burnaby refinery. Ownership of the company was split between Canadian Bechtel Ltd. and Standard Oil and the pipeline was completed in 1953. In 2004, Kinder Morgan Inc. began an expansion project to add a second pipeline, running parallel to the first, that was completed in 2008. Kinder Morgan is a leading pipeline transportation and energy storage company and owns or operates approximately 84,000 miles (135,200 km) of pipelines transporting primarily natural gas, crude oil, and petroleum products. In 2013, Kinder Morgan filed an application to the Canadian National Energy Board to build another pipeline roughly parallel to the existing Trans Mountain, for transporting diluted bitumen between Edmonton, Alberta and Burnaby. This expansion would enable the export of larger volumes of Alberta's controversial bituminous sands oil to the U.S. and Asian countries. Read more here and here.
