Chrome is an abandoned mining camp located on the Kenai Peninsula, on the west shore of Chrome Bay, about 17 miles (27 km) south-southwest of Seldovia, Alaska. The mining camp was named for its association with the nearby chrome ore mine on Claim Point which began operation in 1917.
Chromite was mined on the Kenai Peninsula to fulfill wartime demand in 1917-18 and again in 1942-45. The main ore body was taken from the Chrome Queen Mine on Red Mountain in the Kenai Mountains near Seldovia, but the tidewater mine at Claim Point in Chrome Bay was less expensive to operate. The Chrome Queen Mining Company began development of a chromite deposit in 1942 and during 1943-1944 a very substantial tonnage of chromite was mined and sold to the Metals Reserve Company. A crew of up to 52 men was employed.
After the war the mines were not profitable and the last operation at Claim Point was abandoned when mining equipment sank in Chrome Bay while being transferred from Red Mountain. Read more here and here. Click here to download the CoastView app and explore Chrome Bay.
